Questions & Answers

Are there any requirements to become a home inspector?

There are no requirements to become a private home inspector in Minnesota. Private home inspectors are independent business people who are not licensed or regulated.

What do I have to do to start a home inspection business?

To create your own successful home inspection business, as in any other business, you must have the desire to put forth the effort required to learn the technical materials and the reporting techniques. It is also critical that you understand how to operate a business. Kaplan Professional Schools leads the way with professional home inspection courses, from the most basic to advanced topics, to get you started.

Will Kaplan Professional Schools help me find employment when I'm done?

We do not offer placement or employment services. The majority of our home inspection students come to us as the result of a recommendation from someone in the real estate or real estate appraisal industry. If you are concerned about employment opportunities, we suggest that you investigate the market before attending the courses.

How long does an average home inspection take?

Home inspectors spend part of their time preparing and writing inspection reports, but much of their work is accomplished away from the office, inspecting property and interviewing informed sources. An average beginning inspector can complete 10 inspections per week — 4 hours each. More experienced inspectors who possess sophisticated databases can easily complete a home inspection in 2-3 hours.

Are any of the home inspection courses approved by the Veteran's Administration?

Yes, the following courses are approved by the Veteran's Administration:

Residential Building Analysis 201: The Inspection and Valuation
6-Day Course: ITA Home Inspection – Fast Track
11-Day Course: ITA Home Inspection – Enhanced
Advanced Residential Building Analysis Series (must take all 7 courses to qualify)

If you are entitled to VA benefits, be sure to tell us when you register. After completing your courses and submitting the appropriate paperwork, you will be reimbursed by the VA based on your entitlement.

Is there financial assistance available for the Fast Track or Enhanced courses?

Yes. Kaplan works closely with the SLM Financial Corporation®, a Sallie Mae® company, to make home inspection career training affordable for a variety of students through low-interest financing. When applying for financing, you will need to include the school number for Kaplan Professional Schools, which is 60730500.
