New Mandatory Course Requirement

On July 1, 2011 new requirements affecting continuing education for real estate brokers and salespersons became law. You must take a mandatory training module each year. This will be part of your 15 hour CE requirement each year (30 hours total for each 2 year renewal).

Every year, the Minnesota Department of Commerce will determine the specific required topic and the number of credit hours allocated to it. The courses will either be 3.75 or 7.5 hours and will cover significant topics that are of current interest to real estate professionals.

How this affects you

2012-2013:

  • For The 2012-2013 CE cycle, you’re required to attend the mandatory Contracts & MN Distressed Properties course of 7.5 hours and complete a final exam, for each of the two topics, given in class.
  • To get credit for the course, you must pass the final exams with a score of 72% or greater.
  • This course is part of your 15 hour yearly CE requirement NOT in addition to it.
  • This course must be completed by all licensees to maintain their Minnesota State Real Estate Salesperson and Broker license by June 30, 2013. If you do not complete the course before the June 30, 2013 deadline, your license will become inactive.
  • Completion of this module will also satisfy the broker module training requirement for 2012-2013. There will be no separate broker module course or 2012-2013.
  • As in the past year, Commercial Real Estate Professionals who have filed the appropriate exemption with the state are still exempt from taking the required module.
  • If you did not complete the 2011-2012 CE Cycle mandatory course Residential Leasing, you may register for this course by selecting Residential Leasing - Required Module (Online Course) the ondemand option. You are required to complete this in addition to the 2012-2013 required module, Contracts & MN Distressed Properties, to reactivate your license.
  • The state required module(s) must be completed regardless of your license expiration year.
  • If you completed the state required module, Residential Leasing, after 6-30-2012, you will need to reactivate your license with the State of Minnesota. Licensees are inactive until this course is completed, reported, and all fees paid.
  • Please contact the Minnesota Department of Commerce if you have any questions regarding reactivation at Real Estate Licensing.

2011-2012:

  • For the 2011-2012 CE cycle, you were required to attend the mandatory Residential Leasing course of 3.75 hours and a short final exam, given in class.
  • To get credit for the course, you must pass the final exam with a score of 72% or greater.
  • This course is part of your 15 hour yearly CE requirement NOT in addition to it.
  • If you did not complete the course before the June 30, 2012 deadline, your license became inactive.
  • To reactivate your license, you must complete the previous year’s required course, Residential Leasing.

Requirements

All real estate licensees are required to complete 30 hours of approved continuing education during each licensing period.

Licensees are on a two-year renewal cycle. However, you are still required to complete 15 hours of approved continuing education every year.

You may fulfill your education requirements by attending up to 30 hours during the first year of your two-year license period. However, you cannot skip your first-year 15-hour requirement and then take 30 hours in your second year.

Continuing education credits must be reported annually to your broker. Each broker is required to certify that all licensees have fulfilled their continuing education requirements each year.
