When should I schedule my exam?

While the test appointments may be made as little as three business days prior to an exam, your chances of getting the date and location of your choice increase the further in advance you register.

When should I take my exam?

We encourage students to test within 5 days of completing their classroom training. Additionally, students should give themselves ample time to review classroom materials and complete related assignments. Under ideal circumstances, a student will test 2 to 3 days after they have completed their classroom training.

What is the format of the exam?

The exam is multiple-choice and contains 100 questions which are broken up into two 50 question sections. The first section covers the business and law portion and the second section covers the residential contractor portion.

Is it possible to reschedule the exam?

Yes, to change or cancel your appointment time, you must call or contact Pearson VUE (877) 258-9221 at least two full business days before the day of scheduled appointment. Candidates who change or cancel a reservation without proper notice will forfeit the examination fee.

Can special arrangements be made for candidates with disabilities?

Yes. Pearson VUE complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act. If a physical or learning disability prevents candidates from taking the examination under normal conditions, special arrangements may be requested. Please submit documentation of the disability at least two weeks in advance of the exam to Pearson VUE to help determine the necessary special arrangements. A request form can be found in the Candidate’s Handbook.

What score is needed to pass the exam?

You must earn a score of 70 to pass the MN Residential Contractor – Combo Exam.

  • Two forms of identification (one of which must be a driver's license, state issued ID card, or military ID)
  • The confirmation number provided when the test reservation was made
  • While the Contractor Trade portion of the exam is open-book, you will not be allowed to bring your own copy of the IRC book into the exam with you. However, you will be provided with a copy of the book at the testing center. We will provide you with a copy of the IRC book to reference during the 2-day course and show you how to use it for best results on the exam.
