Energy-Efficient Homes and Their Real Costs (includes energy)

Credit hours: 7.5
Tuition: $125.00

Upcoming Dates

This course has been approved by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry for 7.5 hours of residential contractor continuing education.

Is a dollar spent on energy efficiency today a good investment?

This one day course will lead you painlessly to the solutions for costly home energy loss conditions. Our experienced instructors use plain English to simplify the confusing steps of a home energy audit along with all the costs involved in the newest energy efficient construction solutions available.

The Department of Energy’s Energy Star program is hugely successful in different areas of the country, but is not as well known here.  Even though less than 11% of Minnesota homes are built according to it’s guidelines Energy Star will soon be moving to the forefront of home building in our state.  You will engage in an energy audit case study that leads you step-by-step through a typical energy audit.  You will also understand all the advantages, costs, and limitations to Energy Star and how the popular Green building movement uses it as their foundation to build even more energy efficient homes.

This course fully explains the differences between renewable and non-renewable energy sources and the true cost of utilizing these technologies. From the efficiency of geothermal heating and cooling to the cost of the latest generation photovoltaic shingles you will cover it all. In addition you will cover the shocking role that the building’s structure, mechanicals, and every day appliances play in a home’s energy consumption.  We will even discuss how some crafty home owners are specifically designing homes to make money by selling excess electricity back to the power company.  Packed with tons of facts and eye-opening cost evaluations this course will leave you better armed to discuss energy efficiency with today’s energy conscious customers.

Topics include:

  • Energy Star Program
  • How to measure energy
  • Potential and Kinetic energy
  • Renewable and non-renewable energy sources
  • Newest technologies and their “true” costs
